Why grade level reading?
Focusing on grade-level reading isn’t just a goal—it’s a game-changer for Methuen’s kids and for the city’s future. Right now, Methuen faces an urgent challenge : 52% of first graders, 51% of second graders, and 40% of third graders are reading below grade level. These numbers are more than just statistics—they reflect hundreds of local children who risk starting behind, and staying behind, unless bold action is taken
Reading by the end of third grade is a proven milestone: children who reach this target are four times more likely to graduate high school than their peers who do not. By third grade, kids shift from "learning to read" to "reading to learn"—and those who fall behind struggle to catch up, impacting every subject and every year ahead.
Every child who doesn’t master reading early faces an uphill climb in school and in life. But together, Methuen can reverse this trend—ensuring every child has the skills to learn, dream, and succeed.
